Fashion Idol of the Week- Karen Blanchard

This week’s fashion idol is a true style diva- Karen from London, UK, who now resides in the Big Apple. A beautiful model, stylist, savvy shopper and simply an inspiration to thousands of readers worldwide who flock to their computers daily for their style fix  from Karen’s blog. In return,  she manages to constantly astound her followers with unconventional, artistic, dramatic and always fascinating style choices.

Her  wardrobe consists of a good mix of highs and lows, however my favourite pieces are her vintage treasures that usually didn’t cost much, but once  in Karen’s possession, become priceless. She DIYs most of her clothes, making them truly one of a kind.  Karen is also a master of layering and creating unusual combos like studs, prints and sequins all in one outfit. Don’t believe me? Then check out her interview below and then head on over to her Ah-mazing blog- Where did you get that?

THE INTERVIEW

La Mimi: Name, Age, Location

Karen Blanchard, 29.  New York (moved from London)

La Mimi: When and how was your love for fashion born?

Karen: From my early teens going to London street markets with my Mum looking for bargains.

La Mimi: I spent hours going though your fabulous blog. It’s like a treasure full of inspirational outfits. When and why did you start blogging?

Karen: Thank you!! I started in February 2009 as an outlet to express my love for fashion and style. Plus I was inspired by other bloggers who I used to follow for months and thought ‘I could do this’.

La Mimi: Who takes your amazing photos?

Karen: Thank you! My boyfriend.

La Mimi: Since you are originally from London, how would you say the fashion in the States differs from the UK?

Karen: Generally speaking I have to say that women are more fashion forward in London than in New York. They are not afraid to experiment. Also I sense that women in London are less into high end designer names compared to in New York where they are more brand conscious.  Of course, I am speaking in general terms here. Not about individual cases : )

La Mimi: Where is your favourite place to shop in New York? How about London?

Karen: In New York my fave place is a consignment shop in the East Village called Tokio 7. I also LOVE a handful of vintage/thrift shops where I shop constantly. In London my fave place to shop is Topshop (I find it’s better than the one in New York), plus street markets like Camden Town. They have a fantastic rock chick vintage shop called ROKIT.

La Mimi: New vs Vintage vs DIY? What do you like more and why?

Karen: It will always be vintage for cooler designs, material and you will be wearing something that no one else is. Nothing beats vintage. Next would be DIY because of the personal satisfaction and pride, then new.

La Mimi: What are you into wearing these days?

Karen: Long floor sweeping dresses with mules or beat up vintage Fryes. Also I’m loving wool floppy hats. It’s a nice change from my  Fedoras which I have been wearing for years now.

La Mimi: Any exciting trends you are looking forward to rock in the spring?

Karen: Extreme platforms with socks and more floral prints in unexpected ways.

La Mimi: What has life taught you so far…

Karen: If there’s anything that you have always dreamed of doing or being, then just go for it. You will be surprised how the universe rises up to meet you in realizing your goals in ways you never could imagine.  You just need to make that first step or otherwise nothing will happen.
