Boyfriend Jeans Trend

I recently had a question from a reader and thought my response would be helpful to others wanting to find out about this new suprising trend. Here is the original e-mail and my response:

Hi Mimi,

I’ve been hearing the term “boyfriend jeans” a lot lately. I’m wondering if you can help me get a better understanding of what is meant by that  and how it can be worn.

Thank you,
Erica

Hello Erica!

That’s actually a great question. I’ve been meaning to do a post on this topic for a while now, but never got around to doing it. Boyfriend jeans is a term referring loose fitted or baggy jeans that are a bit longer than they should be, which makes it seem like you borrowed them from your boyfriend. The most fashionable way to wear them is cuffed. The jeans should be rolled up twice but the key is not to make it look too perfect. Boyfriend jeans are actually very hot this year and I predict they are going to get even hotter in spring/summer 2009. This unusual trend has been all over magazines for quite a while now and many celebs such as Katie Holmes, Jennifer Aniston and Rachel Bilson have been sporting this 80’s inspired look. You can wear Boyfriend jeans with ballet flats, flip flops, heels and ankle booties.

For a cutting edge look try wearing them with colorful tights and winter sandals.

Key things to remember if you consider wearing this trend:

-    Avoid looking sloppy
-    This trend might not be for you if you are petite or have shorts legs, as hemmed jeans create an illusion of shorter legs, hence making you look even smaller.
-    If you are still determined to try this trend, then try cuffing straight leg or slim jeans.

So have you ladies been wearing this trend or are you still hesitant?

I have personally only worn cuffed jeans once this fall. Mind you, I wore them with killer heels, because I’m on a shorter side. I love the look, but I know it’s not the best thing to wear for my body type.  I’d love to hear about your stories, so please share!

I think that only the very skinny can wear this look. I know that when I wear baggy pants like this it makes me look so fat! Even Katie Holmes looks like she’s on the chunkier side when she wears her pants like this. And she is SO not chunky.

Thanks Sharon and Katee! Sharon – I do love the trend also, but I guess I have to agree with Katee that it’s just not for me either.

Hey Savymode!- Thanks for stopping by and commenting :)

Hey Christina- I agree it is very comfy, I can be caught wearing boyfriend jeans quite often nowdays. I lost a lot of weight , so most of my jeans are baggy on me… I roll them up and viola! Although I still know it’s not the best look for me, I prefer straight leg jeans, they are the most flattering :)

I was wondering the best way to wear these in the winter, because fall is approaching and I was about to buy a pair of these.

Just bought a pair of Joe’s Jeans Ex Lover cut…love them. I got them in Texas where it’s hot all the time and they looked super cute with heels and flip flops, but I live in the Northwest. How can I wear these in winter?
