Bold Shoulders- Trend Alert

Yes, 80’s are officially back and along with acid wash jeans, neon colors and big hair another 80’s inspired trend makes a huge comeback.

It’s all about the shoulders this upcoming fall 09- big, sharp, puffy, and sculptured, anything goes, as long as it accents and exaggerates the shoulders. With extended shoulder measurements of as much as 16 to 20 cm (Roskanda Ilincic and Dolce and Gabbana) these oversized structured styles are “excellent for crowd surfing and creating your own spatial void on escalators and in lifts,” says Vogue magazine (August 2009) in its fashion feature entitled “Peak Season.”

Although, we can all agree that Balmain was the initial instigator of the look, many other designers such as Nina Ricci, Emanuel Ungaro, Givenchy and Jean Paul Gautier have embraced the tricky-shoulder trend full on with this season’s collections- each one offering their own interpretation of the trend.

It’s quite funny, because I can still remember my mom wear shoulder pads when I was a little girl and to be honest, I didn’t not like the trend back then. I would always ask her “why do you insert those pads in your blazers and dress shirts?”  and she would tell me that it’s fashionable.  Never in my life did I think the “ugly” trend would make a comeback. Yet, it did and this time around the look is more edgy and sophisticated.  In fact, I can’t wait to get my hands on some Balmain inspired blazers with sharp shoulders.

Will you be wearing “strong shoulders” this fall?

Yes, this time around it is a lot more flattering than it’s original 80s version. I love the sculptural look of most of these pieces, and if I find anything remotely close looking, I’d definitely give it a try. I gotta say the Balmain jacket is my top fave! =) Thanks for the heads up!

    Darling, how are you sweetheart?

    OH YES, I love it.
They say “once you’ve worn it you shouldn’t wear it again”, but I don’t care, they’re not the original 80′s, but it’s all power dressing.
I think they balance some body shapes like pears (mine), so I love it. And I can’t wait to grab something with strong shoulders, or even a DIY….

    Lots of love

I used to have the same thoughts back in the 80s, I thought shoulder pads were totally hideous and cannot fathom how anyone would want to wear those things out!

However, I must admit the updated strong shoulder looks pretty appealing. Especially the Balmain jacket:)

Oh Yes, I loved it since back then. But when I used to try my mums clothes with their shoulder pads; looked hanging on my shoulders and didn’t suit me CUZ I WAS a typical lil girl in mumi’s closet …
Now that it’ll be back would like to have my own and try to rock those sharp shoulders blazer or so…
In 80′s it looked more simple, just as a pad.. Now it is more interesting and more fashionscious..

    Loves it ..

    Thanx LA Mimi

I keep flip flopping on this one. On one hand, strong shoulders help balance my lower half. On the other hand, I already have fairly broad shoulders, and I’m not sure emphasising that is a good thing. On the other hand, my style is way more classic & timeless than these shoulders allow. And on the last hand, I’m an accountant (and need to dress fairly conservatively) by day, mommy in the evenings & weekends, so I just don’t think they work for me.

I’ll admire them on all you other fashion forward gals!

PS I don’t really have 4 hands, although with 3 boys sometimes that would be nice!

Gosh how much I love this trend!
Especially the ones by Ungaro, Givenchy and Balenciaga.
A powerful but feminine shoulder really makes me feel good!

The updated shoulder is better than it was in the 80′s but I still don’t think I will be joining in. What I will defintitely try a bit of is the trend of heavily embroidered shoulders… still attracting attention just not so much/
